The Newman Arms
Pubs - London W1T1NG
The Newman Arms is a historic pub located in Fitzrovia, London. The pub dates back to 1730 and played a role in London’s 20th century literary scene. It was the model for the “Proles” pub in George Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four and was frequented regularly by famous characters such as George Orwell and Dylan Thomas. The pub also featured in a scene in Michael Powell’s film Peeping Tom. The pub was taken over by Truman’s Brewery in 2018, and it is the brewery’s first pub opening since being re-founded in 2010, now operating from a site in Hackney Wick.
The Newman Arms is the perfect place to sample the east London brewery’s ales and has a food menu specializing in pies. The building was home to a brothel before opening its doors as a drinking establishment, and the girl who leans suggestively and seductively from the painted dummy, upper window is intended to present passers-by with a depiction of one of the long ago residents who once plied her trade - perhaps in similar fashion from this very window - on the premises. Come and experience the best of London’s night-life at The Newman Arms.
